01 Scientific Overview & Source Physics

Discovered in the spiral galaxy NGC 3621 at approximately 22 million light-years, SN 2024ggi offered astronomers a rare close-up look at the terminal demise of a massive star. Prompt spectroscopic follow-up detected early circumstellar flash signatures that rapidly evolved into a classical Type II plateau as the expanding hydrogen envelope expanded and cooled.
