Merger in the Lower Mass Gap: Neutron Star Collides with Mystery Compact Object

GW230529 represents a landmark gravitational wave detection by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration during the O4 run. The primary component was determined to be 2.5 to 4.5 solar masses—placing it squarely in the elusive lower "mass gap" between known neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes. The secondary object was a 1.2 to 2.0 solar mass neutron star.

First Multi-Messenger Binary Neutron Star Merger & Kilonova

The foundational milestone of modern multi-messenger astronomy. The coalescence of two neutron stars was detected in gravitational waves, followed 1.7 seconds later by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) detected by Fermi-GBM and INTEGRAL, and subsequently identified across the entire electromagnetic spectrum in host galaxy NGC 4993 as kilonova AT 2017gfo.

Intermediate-Mass Black Hole Formation in the Pair-Instability Gap

A short-duration gravitational wave burst (approx. 0.1 seconds) resulting from the collision of two massive black holes of 85 M☉ and 66 M☉. The primary black hole fell directly inside the pair-instability supernova mass gap, where stellar core-collapse theoretically cannot produce remnants. The remnant was a 142 M☉ intermediate-mass black hole.
